Australia's richest suburbs and jobs revealed

New data has revealed whereAustralia'srichest people live - and what they do for a crust.

The Australian Taxation Office has released data compiled by tax returns from 2019-2020, filed by more than 14 million Australians.

And it turns out Perth has the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the country.

Residents of Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove in the Western Australian capital boast an average taxable income of $325,343 apiece.

But New South Wales postcodes filled eight out of the remaining nine top 10 spots, with 2027 (HMAS Ruschcutters, Darling Point, Edgecliff, Point Piper) recording an average taxable income of $205,957 in second place.

Just one Victorian postcode made the top 10, with residents of Toorak and Hawksburn making a tidy $184,939 annually on average.

Rural postcodes populated the other end of the table, with many areas reporting negative taxable income, which could be due to agricultural losses through the financial year.

And if you're curious as to who might live in the poshest suburbs in the country, the ATO can offer some suggestions.

Surgeons were the highest-paid professionals in the country with an average income of $406,068, followed by fellow medical toilers anaesthetists ($388,814) and internal medicine specialists ($310,848).

Other top 10-paid jobs included financial dealer ($279,790), psychiatrist ($252,691), other medical practitioners ($232,903), judicial or legal professionals ($189,538), mining engineer ($188,083), engineering manager ($161,514) and financial investment adviser or manager ($155,882).

This compares to the overall average taxable income for Australians of $63,882 - though there's a $20,000 gender pay discrepancy hidden there.

Men on average in 2019-2020 earned $74,559 in taxable income, compared to $52,798 for women.
