Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell has welcomed the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan, supported across the country.
Endorsement of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan by Education Ministers across Australia today backs in the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s Teacher Supply Strategy and cements NSW’s position as a leader in teacher supply and retention.
Education Ministers from across the Commonwealth met virtually today to endorse the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan, which reflects many of the initiatives already in place in NSW through the $125 million Teacher Supply Strategy.
Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell welcomed the plan, which was supported by her counterparts from across the country, including many Labor Ministers, and mirrors NSW’s approach to boost teacher supply and retention.
“Teacher supply challenges are not unique to NSW so it’s fantastic that the foundation we’ve laid here is now being built on by the Commonwealth and other states and territories, and reflected in the National Plan,” Ms Mitchell said.
“It’s not lost that while NSW Labor continuously attacks our approach, their counterparts across the country have given it a ringing endorsement today.
“It’s the Liberals and Nationals Government in NSW that will continue with a relentless focus on increasing the supply of teachers across our public school system. So far this year, we’ve already recruited almost 7,000 public school teachers in permanent teaching positions – up 40 per cent on the same period last year.”
The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s Teacher Supply Strategy has a range of initiatives to address the teacher supply issue over the coming years, including:
·Mid-Career Transition to Teaching – attracting mid-career professionals into teaching.
·Rural and Remote teacher incentives – encouraging teachers into our rural and regional schools.
·Teach for Australia – a bespoke program in NSW to get high-calibre candidates into a teaching role.
·Recruitment Beyond NSW – attracting overseas teachers into NSW public schoo
The National Action Plan also reflects action in NSW to strengthen Initial Teacher Education, reduce the admin burden on our teachers, and elevate the teaching profession, including through the‘Teaching Opens Doors’campaign.
