Changing roles is the best way to make more money, a leading employment marketplace says.
Dreaming of a better salary? Changing roles is often the best way to make that a reality, according to employment marketplace SEEK.
Recent research by the career platform found workers who changed roles had a 1.6 times greater salary increase than those who stayed in the same job.
Nationally, advertised salary growth remains strong at 4.5 per cent year-on-year, according to SEEK’s latest advertised salary index, which measures the growth in advertised wages for jobs posted on the site.
The quarterly report, released on Thursday, revealed advertised salaries grew the fastest for roles in the community services and development sector at 8.9 per cent year-on-year.
This was largely reflective of the Fair Work Commission’s decision to increase wages for aged care workers mid-last year, which impacted data in July and August, SEEK said.
According to SEEK, recent growth has been more modest.
Information and communication technology, on the other hand, continued to experience relatively weak growth in advertised salaries at just 1.9 per cent year-on-year.
Looking back on the last year, jobs in the community services and development sector took out six of the top 20 roles with the biggest annual salary increases in Australia, according to SEEK data.
Three were in manufacturing, transport and logistics, and retail and consumer products, and two were in the healthcare and medical sector.
One role each in trades and services; administration and office support; engineering; mining, resources and energy; construction; and insurance and superannuation rounded out the rest of the list.
The top five roles were a fitter technician, licensed aircraft maintenance engineer, residential personal carer, support assistant and road train operator.
SEEK senior economist Matt Cowgill said advertised salary growth was cooling in line with the labour market, but remained robust.
The less populous states led the nation, with advertised salaries rising 5.6 per cent year-on-year in Tasmania.
Meanwhile, NSW and Victoria recorded below-average increases for the same period at 4.3 and 4.4 per cent respectively, which SEEK attributed to ongoing sluggishness in labour demand.
With unemployment rising, and with fewer jobs advertised than a year ago, employers aren’t having to compete quite as hard for talent to fill vacant roles, lessening the need for wage increases for new hires, Cowgill said.
The good news for workers is that advertised salaries are now growing faster than inflation, after a period of declining real wages.
