Businesses laud move as 'very useful step in the right direction'
The Australian government has unveiled a new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) aimed at addressing critical skills shortages in the country's economy.
The new list includes over 450 occupations and spans a wide range of industries, including construction, agriculture, cyber security, health, and education.
The government is determined to tackle the skills shortage, especially in the construction sector. This is an important step to attract qualified workers to help build more homes, said Immigration Minister Tony Burke in a statement.
The CSOL will be used in the Core Skills stream of the new Skills in Demand visa, which is set to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa on December 7.
It will also be applied to the Direct Entry stream of the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa.
The Core Skills Occupation List plays an important role in ensuring Australia has a targeted skilled migration system that addresses genuine skills gaps in the economy, and works in conjunction with our work to train Australians, said Skills and Training Minister Andrew Giles in a statement.
The CSOL comes as the Business Council of Australia (BCA) previously called for skilled migration visa settings that can attract more trained workers to the country.
We called for more skilled workers to help boost housing supply and today's announcement is a very useful step in the right direction, said BCA chief executive Bran Black in a statement.
According to the BCA, addressing the country's skills shortage will need getting the right training settings for Australians and ensuring that migration settings can also fill the gaps.
We always want to see Australians obtain the right skills to access job opportunities in growing and new sectors, but right now we have significant workforce shortages and the changes announced today will help fill gaps, Black said.
