A Brisbane worker has revealed what she really earns as a traffic controller and while it's lucrative, it's not $200,000 a year like some people might think. The woman said she became qualified for the job after completing a short amount of training.

The woman was stopped in the street by tradie platform InTrade and was asked about rumours that people in her industry earn $200,000. She said she'd love to be earning that amount.

She shared she was earning over $100,000 a year for her job as a traffic controller. She said she hadn't heard of anyone at her workplace who was pulling in $200,000 for the role.

Minimum wages for traffic controllers on construction sites are set out in the Fair Work Ombudsman Building and Construction General On-site Award.

Casual traffic controllers on non-residential construction sites are paid a minimum rate of $35.04 per hour, plus penalty rates, which include $63.07 per hour on Sundays and $77.08 per hour on public holidays.

The Traffic Management Association of Australia said some traffic controllers may have the potential to earn high salaries due to penalty rates while working long hours on unionised sites during night shifts and public holidays.

But it said these situations were in no way the norm, with the peak body citing SEEK data that found average annual salaries for traffic control jobs were more realistically in the range of $55,000 to $75,000.

Traffic control is an important and dangerous profession that plays a vital role in road safety, TMAA CEO Matthew Bereni said.

Our members undergo rigorous training. Most traffic controllers take immense pride in their work.

'Two days' to become qualified for the lucrative job

While the woman isn't pulling in $200,000 a year, her salary of $100,000 is still higher than the median full-time wage of $88,400 per year.

The woman shared it took her two days of training to become qualified to become a traffic controller.

To become a traffic controller, you'll need to complete the accreditation required in your state or territory.

For example, in Queensland, where the woman is based, you must complete an approved traffic controller training course. This will have two parts.

The first part is an in-class training program, which the Department of Transport and Main Roads notes usually takes eight to nine hours to complete.

The second part is on-the-job training, with a minimum of 20 hours of supervised practical experience.

The woman was asked about the amount of flak traffic controllers get online for the amount of money they earn for the job and had one response for people.

Come and give it a go, she said.

She said the job could be harder than it looks, but if you know your stuff, you're good.
