To assist in propagating and cultivating and/or growing plants in the nursery and carry out all basic tasks of a Production Horticulturalist (nursery production) including propagating, weeding, watering, pest and disease management, fertilising plants, maintaining potted stock, and irrigation and drainage of plants.
• Assist in monitoring and managing nursery plants towards production.
• Ensuring that all land preparations are completed as per established procedures.
• Maintain plants including weeding, pruning, watering, and fertilisation of plants.
• Conduct soil testing and fumigation of soil to ensure consistent growth of plants.
• Understand plant nutrition and watering requirements and ensure plant conditioning is maintained.
• Organise and assist in plant propagation including organisation of appropriate equipment and undertaking plant propagation technic and production methods.
• Propagates plants by seeds, direct cutting, division, layering and other methods as required.
• Advise on the identification of pests and disease and on regulations regarding the quality grading and dispatching of products.
• Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases as required.
• Audit/monitor quality procedures at nurseries and processing facilities to ensure compliance with required standards including ISO quality management systems.
• Operate irrigation systems and report on any faults to the manager or director.
• Manage, install and operate drainage systems.
• Ensure all material inputs are adequate for respective operations.
• Assess quality of work and take corrective actions where applicable. • Follows safety policies and procedures and maintains safety standards.
• Wear and use protective safety equipment when identified as appropriate.
• Participate in programs and assessments to improve health and safety in the workplace.
• Liaise with Nursery Manager as and when required.
• Perform duties as reasonably directed by management.
